5 ways to save $100

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Most people don’t realise that saving some extra cash can be much more straight forward and easier than it sounds. Listed below are 5 different ways to easily save $100.

1. Watch your power consumption.

By being conservative with your power usage you will notice over the year some reductions in your power bills. Turn off those appliances if you aren’t using them. Also if you need to buy any new whitegoods or other electrical items such as TVs or computers, check their energy efficiency rating. Some energy providers also offer peak and off peak rates, so try to use your products during the off peak if that suits. Also consider better insulation for heating/cooling and solar hot water units if you are building a new house or need to replace your old unit.

2. Shop at discount supermarket for food and groceries.

You can make your dollars work harder for you if you shop around and buy your food and groceries from a discount supermarket instead of the more expensive supermarkets. Even if its only $30 dollars a week your saving, over a month or two you will really notice those savings adding up.

3. Pay off your credit card.

If you have outstanding credit card debts where you are paying high itnerest, consolidate them onto a lower interest, cut up the old cards and pay it off. Avoid spending on credit until you have cleared your previous debts. If you need a credit card then only spend on it what you can pay off in full at the end of the month without incurring fees or interest.

4. Shop around for better deals.

Spending 30 minutes to shop around for a better deal for your cell phone, home phone, internet and cable / pay TV could save you $5 or $10 a month or more on a better plan. If you have a service that you aren’t using then get rid of it. Just make sure you are aware of any fees that you may be charged if you cancel or switch providers. And compare terms and conditions before you make any decision.

5. Save your change.

Those loose coins that you find in your jeans pocket at the end of a night out or during the week could easily add up to hundreds of dollars over several weeks. Save them in a piggy bank and deposit them into your account every 2 months. You will be surprised at how quickly they add up, and at the same time you keep all that loose change together, not down the back of the couch.

The benefits of using a credit card to pay for your every day expenses.

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

There are many benefits of using a credit card that people may not realise. Of course, with the benefits, there are also other disadvantages that we should also be aware of.

A credit card is basically a means of obtaining something now without using your own money to pay for it. You are effectively borrowing the money to pay for the item from the bank with the promise or requirement to pay them back at a later stage. It does not have the hassle of obtaining a loan and are mainly used for small purchases under $5000.

The main benefit of a credit card is that you can purchase the item now. This is very much the culture we live in today in the western world. We want that product or service now, that holiday now, even before we can afford it. For some people this is a great thing as they are disciplined with their money and pay off their credit card by the due date. For others though this is their downfall. They will spend their ‘free’ money now, miss out on their due date and pay high interest rates and fees. They will also continue to spend on their card without paying it off. The benefit therefore is for the consumer who can control their spending and ensure they pay off their credit card each month.

With this diligent behaviour they can enjoy the benefits of a good credit rating, which is useful for future credit from the bank, managing their cash flow so that they can utilise their available cash in short term investments or cash funds while before their bill is due, and also enjoy reward points for using their credit card.

A credit card is something that should only be used by those that are responsible as they can also cause much heartache and expense, especially if you fail to pay off a high balance.

Of course a credit card can also be used when money levels are low and fund a new business opportunity. Speaking from experience here, I first used my credit card to get into the online marketing business. After the initial investment I was able to quickly make the money back and have been in a positive cash flow position ever since. This was great as I did not want to goto the bank for a loan of $3000. So I was able to avoid fees and interest. Of course for these types of opportunities online, you should only ever spend your money on something that you genuinely believe will be successful and actually make you some money.

When it comes to rewards and frequent shopper points, it is worth shopping around for the best card. Some cards provide high rewards but also have large annual fees for their use. Try to find a card that is both a low annual fee but a worthwhile reward system. As you continue to pay for things online, such as subscriptions, advertising or web hosting you will be able to enjoy both the security of paying with a credit card but also receive rewards for the expenses incurred.

At the end of the day, remember do not spend more than you are willing to pay off. If you do get into the trap and are looking to get out of a massive credit card debt, the first thing to do is stop using your card, and determine a financial plan to pay off the card as soon as possible. I won’t go into details on how to pay off your balance here but will try to cover that in a later post.

Is it really possible to make any money from stock photography?

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

This is something that I have often wondered about. Is it actually possible to make any money off stock photography? There are plenty of sites that are selling people’s photography and then others that are claiming to make decent money from it.

I had an experiment, where nearly one year ago, I created a profile on dreamstime.com and loaded up about 10 photos that I had taken. I picked those photos that were more of stock photography quality as these sites have tight quality control before they actually accept your image.

The purpose of the experiment was to see of these 10 photos, how many would I sell or at least get viewed. I wasn’t doing it to make a particular amount of money off, but just wanted to see the results. Given that each image does take a bit of time to upload, as you give it descriptions, titles, keywords etc. There also may be some editing and resubmission in some cases where there was a problem with the image.

So anyway, the final result is that I only managed to make around $15 dollars, from just leaving it there and not really adding any images. That was from about 10 images. My conclusion is that its not worth the effort, unless you are a photographer that is concentrating on stock photography and do it in order to make a living. In order to make any serious money from it, you really need photos that will sell a number of times, over 50 times in fact. Otherwise, you will spend too much time submitting and waiting for people to buy. I guess the thing that I didn’t spend enough time doing was to see which categories needed extra photos and go out and take photos to suit that category. Because digital cameras are so easily accessible, everyone is a pro-sumer photographer and is submitting heaps of photos, flooding these sites. The trouble with my submissions is that I was more taking photos that I enjoyed and these weren’t exactly suitable for stock photography for websites, magazines etc. Instead, I actually was able to sell some of the same photos as Fine Art photography at a Gallery in Australia and made over $1000 from 3 photos alone. It is more physical, as I organised printing and framing, but the return was much higher than that of the stock photography sites.

I’d be very interested to hear from anyone that has actually started generating a regular passive income from their stock photography in the comments. I know of people that do it regularly, but often they still need to supplement their income as a photographer doing wedding photography or portrait photography.
